The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, war-time veterans organization, devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is a not-for-profit community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members, men and women, in nearly 15,000 American Legion posts worldwide.

Magellan Post 604 was originally formed and instituted by a group of California Filipino Veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces during World War II. Many of the Filipino Veterans were decorated war heroes and have come and gone.

Today, the Filipino-American Veterans who served in the conflicts of Korea, Vietnam, Panama, and the Middle East Gulf crisis have come together to continue the tradition and legacy left behind by the founders of Magellan Post 604.

U.S. Army was formed on June 14, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized enlistment of riflemen to serve the United Colonies for one year. The Army’s mission is to fight and win our Nation’s wars by providing prompt, sustained land dominance across the full range of military operations and spectrum of conflict in support of combatant commanders.

U.S. Navy was formed on October 13, 1775 (Abolished Feb 1781 - Reinstated 7 Sep 1781).  The mission of the Navy is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas.

U.S. Marine Corps was formed on November 10, 1775.  The Marines have a unique mission statement, and, alone among the branches of the U.S. armed forces, "shall, at any time, be liable to do duty in the forts and garrisons of the United States, on the seacoast, or any other duty on shore, as the President, at his discretion, shall direct."

U.S. Air Force was formed as a separate branch of the military on September 18, 1947.  It is the most recent branch of the U.S. military to be formed. The mission of the United States Air Force is to deliver sovereign options for the defense of the United States of America and its global interests -- to fly and fight in Air, Space, and Cyberspace.

U.S. Coast Guard was formed on August 4, 1790.  It's mission is to “Protect the U.S. Maritime Domain and the U.S. Marine Transportation System and deny their use and exploitation by terrorists as a means for attacks on U.S. territory, population, and critical infrastructure.  Prepare for and, in the event of attack, conduct emergency response operations. When directed, as the supported or supporting commander, conduct military homeland defense operations.”
